A recent addition to Ara’s architecture and interior design management team has become an Honorary Fellow at the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), a global membership qualifying body for architectural technology.

Dr Adam Khan is the first architect from New Zealand to become a CIAT Fellow, an honour awarded to a "distinguished individual who is eminent in their field and whose work has had a positive impact on Architectural Technology."  He accepted the award at a ceremony in London last month.

Joining Ara as academic manager, Architectural Studies & Interior Design, in August this year, Dr Khan has brought extensive international experience to the role. He was previously a senior academic at Architecture College for Women at Dar Al-Hekma University in Saudi Arabia and before that, Dean of School of Environment, Architecture and Design at SRM Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai, India.

Ara Te Pūkenga Head of the Engineering and Architectural Studies Department, Robert de Roo says, "Adam has a strong link with most of the Architecture School faculty leaders here in New Zealand, which has seen us engaging with these connections to ensure that our thinking is aligned with the planned direction of other programmes."

“His international experience means that he brings a set of skills and experience which will enable the Architectural Studies Programme to review and renew," de Roo continued.

The nomination for the award revealed Dr Khan is "a renowned, innovative leader within the broad field of architecture in both higher education and industry practice. . . and is active on an international scale both in regard to architectural practice, teaching and research and he possesses leadership skills critical to the successful development of the institutions with whom he works, through his extensive network which he has nurtured throughout his career.

Through these international networks, he has been able to make financially viable and profitable ventures for his associated educational institutions by establishing interdisciplinary schools of research in architecture and architectural technology."

De Roo says that Dr Khan has been impressed with the programme and the people at Ara and is looking forward to working with the team to enhance the learning experience for the learners.
