Ara Institute of Canterbury is proud to celebrate the broadcast of Thriving with Down Syndrome: Luka’s Story, a heartwarming episode from Attitude TV featuring one of our own – Luka Willems.

Luka, who lives with Down syndrome, is a man of many talents and a shining example of how people with Down syndrome can pursue diverse and exciting opportunities.

He tuned in to the episode from Europe, where he’s currently preparing to represent New Zealand at the World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships – one of his many passions, previously highlighted in our previous news story: Cookery student to compete again at Virtus Global Games.

Luka’s mum, Angelique, shared that their wider whānau (extended family) gathered to watch the documentary on YouTube. “I thought Attitude wove a wonderful story,” she said. “We laughed our heads off at some of the footage. They really celebrated Luka’s personality and his humour.”

The episode showcases Luka’s vibrant life, including his studies at Ara. He’s currently enrolled part-time in the New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills (Level 2) – Art and Design Context.

He has previously completed qualifications in hospitality and food and beverage service, including barista and restaurant service strands.

His current study path challenges him creatively and supports his passions for food blogging and social media influencing.

Angelique added that Luka especially enjoyed seeing his friend Josh featured in the episode. Despite being on opposite sides of the world, the two have been quoting lines from the show to each other over the phone.

Although Luka missed the chance to host an Attitude watch party in Christchurch, he’s been keeping up with his media course remotely - gathering visual inspiration and preparing to share his ideas with classmates via Zoom.

“Luka’s tutor Christian has organised a way for him to connect next Friday, which is very cool,” Angelique said.
