Feeling good and functioning well are key components for optimising our personal wellbeing and performance.  The Zone offers specific services to all humans, including athletes of all levels, community groups and organisations, in a purpose-built sports science facility at Ara’s City campus in Christchurch.

Talk with us about your goals – we’re happy to provide advice on suitable services and packages that will help you achieve your objectives.

About our teaching clinic

The Zone was developed to support humans with their health and nutrition goals and provide Bachelor of Sports Science students to develop real life work experience. Throughout their 2nd and 3rd year, students observe and assist The Zone’s practitioners with the delivery of services.

The purpose of this free 15 minute phone call is to discuss with an exercise and wellbeing professional, which of The Zone's Service(s) best meet your health and wellbeing support needs.

At the end of the call, you will then have the option to book a relevant appointment.

Please contact The Zone directly to set up an appointment time: the.zone@ara.ac.nz | 021 276 8653

General Fitness Testing

To get a baseline measurement of your current fitness, a physical activity assessment, such as an Astrand Test can be performed on a stationary bike.

Following a warm up, you'll be required to cycle for 6 minutes at a specific workload to reach a steady state heart rate >110 bpm. This data is used to calculate an estimated VO2 max and estimated training heart rate zone intensities for aerobic activity.

Please allow for 45-60 mins for the entire appointment to be completed.

VO2 Max and Anaerobic Lactate Threshold Testing

This type of testing is for all levels of endurance athletes i.e. recreational, masters and elite, including cyclists, runners, rowers, adventure racers and multisporters. The analysis provides accurate heart rate training zone intensities to ensure training plans are developed with accuracy.

The VO2 Max Test is performed using the new VO2 Master portable equipment.  This study found the VO2 Master was comparable to those of other major portable metabolic analyzer brands (e.g., COSMED, Oxycon, MetaMax). https://vo2master.com/2020/09/14/validity-and-reliability-of-the-vo2-master-pro-for-oxygen-consumption-and-ventilation-assessment/

Please note: Testing takes approximately one hour and requires blood samples to be taken with a prick to the finger.
